A Heart To Heart with Emily Deschanel

Emily is on the cover of this month’s issue of Organic Spa so don’t forget to grab your copy!

Growing up, while most of Emily Deschanel’s friends and classmates were playing with Barbies, she was busy scheming her version of the ultimate, multi-tiered Dream House. “I wanted to be an architect when I was younger. I was always trying to build a Barbie house with things like wood or Legos,” says the Los Angeles native, who appears as Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan on the Fox hit television series, Bones.

Maybe that’s what happens when you get your passport when you’re four years old.

“We would travel when my dad would work, and I went to a million different schools,” she says, referring to father, cinematographer Caleb Deschanel. “We lived in Italy, London, Canada, former Yugoslavia, and the Seychelles, off the coast of Africa. It’s kind of funny that I found the most sedentary job, and now have to have a job near home especially with kids, and my husband works on the same lot. It’s really wonderful and such a luxury.”

The svelte, chestnut-haired beauty, whose younger sister is actor Zooey Deschanel, is married to actor David Hornsby, and mother of two sons, Henry, who turns four next month, and Calvin, three-and-a-half months. She has appeared in other television series including American Dadand The Cleveland Show and films such as Spider-Man 2, My Sister’s Keeper and Cold Mountain. But, she admits, she didn’t seriously contemplate acting as a career until she was a junior or senior in high school. “I don’t think I considered it as a profession even though my mother was an actor,” says Emily, of her mother, actress Mary Jo Deschanel.

It’s also the time that Emily, a vegan for 22 years, first saw the documentary Diet for a New America. “It shed some light on the conditions of factory farms in the U.S., and how that can lead to deteriorating health and the impact on the environment,” she says. “There are three main points, including the cruelty of factory farms, which is now the norm, and how the animals are treated as a commodity. As a result the animals are treated very cruelly, they are in cages and they can’t even turn around. I didn’t like it that that is where my food was coming from, and I hadn’t thought about how my food had gotten to my plate before that.”

Visiting Farm Sanctuary Gave ‘A New Perspective’ To Emily Deschanel’s Life

Emily Deschanel is an avid animal lover and has been a vegan for a long time. Recently, the talented actress visited a Farm Sanctuary animal shelter. This was the first time that she was making such a visit and said that it was a “life-changing” experience for her. As the actress, aged 38 said, “I had already known that farm animals have feelings and intellect, but then to really see them up close and spend time with these animals was pretty incredible,” “I didn’t realize how individual chickens could be, and the people who work there know each sheep by name from far away. They’re individual creatures who have their own little souls and personalities and quirks.”

Deschanel Involved With Organization For The Last 8 Years

Deschanel has been deeply involved with the organization for the last 8 years. The organization runs 3 shelters in addition to working towards passing legislation for the humane treatment of farm animals. She said that she especially felt for the farm animals, because every yearover 10 billion animals are killed to provide food.  The numbers are really high, but till date nobody has raised a voice largely because they are not aware of these numbers.

Actress Desirous That Her Son InheritsLove Of Animals From Her

Deschanel is hopeful that the love and sympathy that she has for animals can be passed on to her son Henry, aged 3. Emily Deschanel Is on a Mission to Save Farm Animals

“People” — Longtime vegan Emily Deschanel had a “life-changing” experience when she visited a Farm Sanctuary animal shelter for the first time.

“I had already known that farm animals have feelings and intellect, but then to really see them up close and spend time with these animals was pretty incredible,” the actress, 38, tells PEOPLE. “I didn’t realize how individual chickens could be, and the people who work there know each sheep by name from far away. They’re individual creatures who have their own little souls and personalities and quirks.”

Deschanel has been involved with the organization – which operates three shelters in addition to working to pass legislation for the humane treatment of farm animals – for the past eight years.

“Ten billion animals a year are killed for food in the United States alone,” she notes. “It’s insane. I’ve done different things for different animals, from primates to dogs and cats, but I really like to focus on [farm animals] because the numbers are so high and people aren’t as aware.”

It’s a passion she hopes to pass along to her 3-year-old son Henry, whom she has brought to visit Farm Sanctuary’s rescue shelters.

“I want him to be comfortable with these animals and aware of them and why we choose not to eat them,” says the Bones star. “To have compassion for these animals is a great place to start, and that’s what I love for my son to gain from spending time with these animals.”

The Farm Santuary Benefit

Last night, Emily attended the Farm Sanctuary Benefit in Los Angeles. Last year, Emily was the official spokesperson for the Walk for Farm Animals, an annual event to raise funds and awareness about farm animal abuse. Head over to the gallery for the latest additions.
